About Your Tutor…

I would love to embark on a journey through the realms of the past with you, and along the way, we can hone your English skills. Together, we’ll explore historical narratives, unravel the mysteries of the ages, and ignite your passion for learning.
With over 16 years of teaching experience examining and examiner Team Leader, I have dedicated myself to helping my students on their journey of self-realisation. Throughout my career, I have worked in various educational institutions, mainstream and special needs, honing my skills and expertise in delivering high-quality education to my students.
I am passionate about my subjects, History and English, something I believe becomes evident when I am teaching. As a person who enjoys anything about the past, I have involved myself in archaeological excursions, volunteering with paleontological departments and continue to learn through my research. My primary goal as an educator is to provide personalised online assistance to students, helping them build confidence, achieve excellent grades in History and English. This is achieved by preparing my students effectively for examinations.
I believe in creating a supportive, engaging learning environment that fosters critical thinking and academic growth. Each student learns differently, which is why I tailor each lesson to suit the student’s learning style.
Exam boards covered:
IGCSE, AS Level and A Level curriculum (OCR, CIE, Ed-excel, AQA, IB exam boards), Classical Society and History, and Southern African History
Methodology:
In depth discussions in and around topics of interest to create further interest and identify any gaps in knowledge.
Essay writing skills:
My method of teaching focuses on what my student needs and follows their learning style as much as possible.
For the initial lesson I ask for the student to write an essay based on the topic they will be examined upon or to submit a previously marked essay from your classwork. My reasons for this are:
to assess where the student’s weaknesses are
if it is already typed up I will comment and use tracked changes to identify the elements that are missing and that examiners will be looking for.
once I have done the suggestions and detailed comments our future lessons will centre on correcting the essay together to pull it towards an exemplar essay that can be used for future reference.
the process of correcting and editing done by the student with my guidance is crucial to their understanding of why the changes are necessary and this will be shown with the use of examining rubrics
this method improves student’s overall writing style and confidence.
Overall, once this initial essay is completed I work with my students by providing them with past paper questions so the writing process is applied consistently all the while improving their essay writing skills which can also be used with any other essay orientated subject you may be studying.
For exam preparation most of the lesson focus is on essays and the time examinations swing around my students will:
have learned how to understand exactly what the question is looking for and how to approach it
have learned how to write introductions that get grades but more importantly giving the essay direction and focus (to achieve more grades).
have learned how to select relevant information that answers the question and structure the main body paragraphs be it for a standard essay or a source-based essay.
have been taught the correct analysis of sources as well as the language used to present findings/arguments within in the essay
have learned the difference between a source and interpretation
will have learned how to conclude an essay ensuring that it remains focused on the question and meets examiner expectations.
By following the above steps, future essays will flow logically whilst answering the question and remaining within the exam time constraints.
Additional preparation for other examinable ares:
How to write logical paragraphs for shorter questions
How to summarise content so that the answer remains relevant to the question focus.
